What comes to mind when you think the month of August? Here at Epic Health Services, we think of Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
August is Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness Month. Spinal Muscular Atrophy or SMA is a disease that is all too real to some of our families. SMA is a genetic neuro-muscular disease that is characterized by muscle atrophy and weakness.
SMA is believed to affect as many as 10,000 to 25,000 children and adults in the United States alone. Did you know that 1 in 50 people are carriers of the SMA gene? That is approximately 6 million Americans that are carriers. So what can we do to fight these seemingly overwhelming odds?
The SMA Foundation www.smafoundation.org is on the frontline of this daily fight. Their important function is to broker the exchange of critical information and to forge new collaborations and alliances in the fight against SMA. The SMA Foundation also serves as a hub and information clearinghouse for SMA and awareness of this disease. Thankfully the SMA Foundation is not alone its fight.
There are numerous foundations and organizations committed to the fight against SMA. With the month August approaching let’s take time to join in the fight against this disease. Through information, knowledge and research we can continue the fight against SMA.
