down syndromeThis week’s Epic Patient Superstar is Miss Melissa Baranow. A vibrant 14 year old, Melissa joined Epic Health Services just after she was born. She is funny, bright, and talented and she is loved by all who know her. We are thrilled to introduce you to one of our long-time Epic family members.

Melissa receives private duty nursing services as well as personal care services from the Epic team of caretakers. An Epic nurse assists Melissa and her family overnight and also attends school with Melissa throughout the day. Alongside her family, the Epic staff wants only the best for sweet Melissa and we all work as a team to make sure this happens. Over the years, Melissa has learned and improved on countless life skills. Some of her favorite tasks to master are learning new colors and memorizing song lyrics.

Adopted almost immediately after birth, Melissa is her forever family’s “little miracle.” Melissa is diagnosed with Down syndrome, but that doesn’t affect her zest for a fun, music-filled life. She loves watching action movies and performing choreography to her favorite songs such as the “Cha Cha Slide” and “Little Teacup.” She enjoys listening to all music, especially the hip-hop, reggae, and salsa genres. On a sunny day, you’ll catch Melissa taking a nice stroll outside with her family. If she’s in charge of choosing the fun activity for the family, she’d want to catch a movie at the local cinema theater. Those closest to her call her “Mimi” and say her laugh is contagious. Everyone adores spending time with Mimi and her hilarious sense of humor.

Epic takes true pride and joy in our pediatric patients. Watching them grow and develop in all aspects is one of the best parts of our company’s mission. We appreciate the partnership we have with Melissa and her family. 14 years and counting, we are excited for all Melissa will accomplish as we continue to walk hand in hand.  Thank you for choosing Epic to be a part of your success story – we hope you sing a song for us today!
