Josh and his family take a break after a fun day at camp!

When it comes to epic parents, Josh Shilling fits the bill!

Nine years ago, Josh founded HEROES – Helping Everyone Reach Outstanding Educational Success. What started as a small camp with only five families participating has turned into a successful program helping more than 700 families in the north Texas area, including many families from our Addison branch.

HEROES is a summer camp for kids and young adults ages 3 to 30 years with special needs. As a father of three children, two of whom have special needs, Josh understands the value that local programs play in helping all children reach their fullest potential.

HEROES offers a unique camp experience that helps participants with vocation, communication and social skills. The focus is on providing the skills needed to become contributing members of society through a variety of community experiences.

And of course, the campers get plenty of time to enjoy fun recreation and leisure activities.

“It’s truly a wonderful experience for the kids,” said Patrick, an Epic nurse who is supporting his client during the summer camp. “Every day is something new, and it’s very encouraging to see the kids branching out of their comfort zones.”

HEROES camps are held several times throughout the year, including six weeks throughout the summer. This summer, the camp will end with an outing to Hawaiian Falls Waterpark.

Thanks, Josh, for all you are doing to help families of children with special needs!
