news-North Brunswick-NJ-SMA-Private Duty Nursing-08-2013 (1)Do you know Stephen Scully, Jr.? If you live in Frenchtown, New Jersey, chances are you know the name. That’s because Stephen is somewhat of a local celebrity in his hometown as well as at Epic’s North Brunswick office.

Stephen has Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type I (SMA), a genetic neuromuscular disease that causes muscle atrophy and weakness. Life expectancy for children with SMA Type I isn’t very high since many do not live past the age of two.

But Stephen has defied the odds! Earlier this year, he celebrated his 11th birthday – celeb style.

With a reason to celebrate, the Frenchtown community pulled out all the stops to make Stephen’s day special. The big bash included monster trucks, dragsters, and even a surprise from Stephen’s favorite NASCAR driver, Tony Stewart.

To cap off the celebration, both the Frenchtown Police Department and Frenchtown Fire Department named Stephen an honorary member.

For Stephen, the support and camaraderie he received on his special day extends to every other day of the year. In fact, his buddies from the police and fire departments stop by and visit him often.

That’s what we call community support!
