John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”
Last Thursday, Epic team members learned about the importance of leadership from Lieutenant General (Ret.) Michael L. Oates, vice president for Army and Special Operations Programs at Lockheed Martin Corporation.
Mr. Oates knows a thing or two about leadership. He completed 32 years of active service in the U.S. Army and served honorably throughout four combat tours of duty.
In recognition of his service, he was awarded three Distinguished Service Medals, three Bronze Star Medals, a Legion of Merit Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.
“We seek a high standard in our leaders,” said Mr. Oates. “If they meet that standard and model the behavior, it encourages the rest of us.”
During his speech, Mr. Oates stressed the importance of a leader’s character and focused on three key traits:
- Humility – Leaders are humble and recognize they are equal to others.
- Empathy – Leaders have a genuine understanding of people and take this into consideration when making decisions.
- Desire for self-improvement – Leaders are introspective and have the ability to recognize and improve on areas of weakness.
“We were honored to have Mr. Oates speak with us,” said Nathan Hoffman, corporate client relations director. “He is a true hero who understands the importance of leadership, and we appreciate the time he spent with our team sharing his real world experiences.”
We would like to extend a special thanks to LTG (Ret.) Michael L. Oates for his time and service to our country!
